Nazareth

“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.” Luke 4:16

Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus. Visit the Church of the Annunciation where Mary was met by the Archangel Gabriel who “announced” to her the coming birth of Jesus. Visit the church over the house and carpentry shop of Joseph where Jesus grew up. Nazareth today is one of the largest Arab cities in Israel. Check out its churches, markets and eateries.

Capernaum – Peter’s Hometown

“Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prision, he departed into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he came and dwelt in Capernaum which is upon the sea coast…” Matthew 4:12-3

K’far Nahum (Capernaum) where Peter lived and Jesus visited. Capernaum was a fishing village in the time of the Hasmoneans located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had a population of about 1,500 and archaeological excavations have revealed two ancient synagogues built one over the other and a church, which was built on top of the home of Peter where Jesus visited.

Via Dolorossa

“And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre and departed. And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.” Matthew 27:59-61

Via Dolorosa (way of sorrow) where Jesus carried the cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Originally built by the mother of Emperor Constantine in 330 A.D., the Church of the Holy Sepulcher commemorates the hill of crucifixion and the tomb of Jesus’s burial. The original Byzantine church was destroyed by the Persians in AD 614. Rebuilt shortly thereafter, the Egyptian caliph al-Hakim destroyed the church in 1009 and had the tomb hacked down to bedrock. The Crusaders rebuilt the church and much of what is standing today is from that time period.

Mt. of the Beatitudes

“Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…” Matthew 5:1-2

Bethlehem

“And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.” Luke 2:15

Visit Bethlehem to see the Church of the Nativity, a major Christian holy site, as it marks the traditional place of Christ’s birth. It is also one of the oldest surviving Christian churches, and the Shepherd’s Field – approximately 2 km to the east of Bethlehem lies the village of Beit Sahour, where one of the most sacred places to Christians; the Shepherds’ Field; is found, identified as the scene where the Angel of the Lord visited the shepherds and informed them of Jesus’ birth.

While most people who had planned to visit Israel in the last quarter of 2023 have understandably postponed their tours due to the current war, we have noticed that many people feel a kind of frustration in the unfolding events that they are not doing enough to show their sympathy and their support for Israel in its darkest hours in decades. They feel compelled to donate to a charity or to speak up about their support for Israel whether it be one on one, in community organized events or on social media. Many people have asked us straight out – “How can we help”? Our best response may be surprising, but we say “VISIT ISRAEL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE”.

Nothing puts Israel into a clearer context than seeing it with your own eyes, experiencing it in person. And now I am going to say something perhaps even more surprising – by “as soon as possible” I mean NOW. While the war is still going on! Nothing puts the current conflict into better context than experiencing it in person. And so we at Touring Israel have put together a very special Solidarity Itinerary. The itinerary includes some touring of the main essential tourist sites including the The Old City of Jerusalem, the Western Wall as well as Masada and Tzfat, but also a variety of activities that are directly related to the current war including:

– Volunteer a few hours to help businesses reeling as a result of the war

– Speak with security professionals for an expert explanation of the background to the war and its objectives

– Meet with citizens displaced from their homes

– Visit with soldiers injured in the war

– Meet families of hostages

A visit to Israel now is like chicken soup for the soul both for you and all the Israelis whose hearts you will touch. And we guarantee you will return home better informed and better equipped to deal with misinformation and with some ideas to share with your friends and community to support Israel from back home.

The essentials:

Kotel (Western Wall)

Stop and reflect at  Judaism’s holiest site. It is said, according to Jewish legend, that when the Temple of God was destroyed the Holy Spirit descended upon this retaining wall to the platform of the Temple. Judaism’s great legacy to the world is spiritual, but the massive stones of the Wall, each with its perfectly carved border, are testimony to the physical grandeur of the ancient Jewish world. Over the centuries, this enduring fragment of the Temple complex has come to symbolize the indestructible attachment of the Jewish people to the land of Israel. For more than 1,000 years, under Islamic governments, the Wall was the closest point that Jews were permitted to approach to the place where the ancient Temple of Jerusalem once stood. Because of the sanctity of the Temple Mount itself, very observant Jews do not go farther than the Wall to this day. The kotel became a place of mourning over the destruction of the Temple and Israel’s exile and it became known in European languages as the “Wailing Wall”.

Masada

Herod’s hilltop fortress where Jews held out against the Romans in the year 73 CE ending the Great Revolt. Ascend up to the mountain – by foot/ by cable car – on the winding “Snake Path” and enter the hilltop fortress though the casemate wall. The remains of the fortress of Masada are well-preserved and have been reconstructed in some parts. The most impressive structure on Masada is King Herod’s northern palace, built on three rock terraces overlooking the gorge below. Near the palace is a large Roman style bath house with a colorful mosaic floor and walls decorated with murals. Many other buildings at the site – such as the luxurious western palace, the mikveh (Jewish ritual bath), storerooms, watchtowers, and a synagogue relate the history of Masada.

Tzfat

This medieval mountaintop village set amid a pine forest – at an elevation of 2,953 feet – is the birthplace of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism). Today it’s a community of artists, mystics, and Hassidim. Safed – one of the four holy cities together with Jerusalem, Hebron, and Tiberias – may play an important role in the final redemption. It’s said that the Messiah will come from Safed on his way to Jerusalem. Wander among the galleries and ancient synagogues that dot the alleyways of this quaint, spiritual village.

One of the great things about Israel is that it has an incredible range of attractions in an extremely compact area. Touring Israel offers a selection of one and two day shore cruise excursions for cruise ship passengers visiting both Haifa and Ashdod ports either with a private guide, or as part of a group.

Red-Med Dive Safari

Stunning marine life, unique sunken ancient ruins, ship wrecks…. From the well preserved natural beauty of the Red Sea, to the Mediterranean – the ancient world’s super highway, there is something for all diving tastes in Israel. Israel is blessed by having access to two very different seas – the Red Sea in the South and the Mediterranean to the West. The Red Sea offers diving in one of the world’s best coral reef environments visited by more than 1200 species of fish, dolphins, reef sharks, sea turtles and other marine species. In addition to its stunning marine life, the Mediterranean also offers treasures such as the Underwater Museum of Caesaria where you can dive amongst the ruins of Herod’s ancient harbor.

Petra

The ancient and fabled city of Petra was built from 800 BC to 100 AD by Nabatean Arabs.  In this era Petra was a fortress, carved out of craggy rocks in an area which was virtually inaccessible. In the first and second century, after the Romans took over, the city reached the peak of its fame. Petra covers an area of about 100 square km, in which over 800 monuments can be found.  When shipping slowly displaced caravan routes, the city’s importance gradually dwindled; it fell into disuse and was lost to the world until 1812, when it was re-discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhart. Nowadays Petra is Jordan’s number one tourist attraction, known as the “rose-red city half as old as time”. The Khazneh (the Treasury), was featured in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’.

One Day Petra Tours From Eilat

If you’re on a really tight schedule its possible to see Petra on a private day tour from Eilat. Petra is located about 2 hours from the Arava Border Crossing near Eilat and we can arrange to have you picked up from a hotel in Eilat, have a private tour of Petra and be back in Eilat by late afternoon. Its not our favorite way of experiencing Petra, but its enough to get a taste of this incredible site. There is also a domestic air service between Tel Aviv and Eilat, so its in fact possible to do the tour in one day from Tel Avi and Jerusalem, although its a long day. Touring Israel can take care of everything including flights and all transfers.

PLEASE NOTE: As of January 1st 2016, all tourists entering Jordan at the Arava border crossing and staying for less than 48 hours require a Visa for Jordan. For stays of more than 48 hours Visa can be obtained at the border.

Wadi Rum

If you have 2 days to spare for Jordan, we recommend combining Petra with a visit to Wadi Rum. Otherwise known as Valley of the Moon, the landscape of Wadi Rum with its immensity, color and awe-inspiring shapes creates an almost supernatural atmosphere. The setting for the film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and the actual location where T.E. Lawrence set his camp, whose book ’The Seven Pillars of Wisdom‘ was named after the seven natural columns varying in height located en route to Wadi Rum.  Bedouin camps are evident in the Wadi. These are still home to a number of Bedouin families who welcome visitors with the hospitality and generosity that Bedouins are so famous for. Explore the desert with a 4×4 driven by a local Bedouin for 2 hours.
